Un, man pašam nemanot, kādas detaļas, pavediens no tā var uzpeldēt manis radītajos darbos.

Vestule pudele

Vēstule pudelē. Viena no interesantākajām Q sērijas grāmatām, kurā adrenalīns pulsē no katras lapaspuses. .

Following in the detective’s footsteps

“I’ve been trying not to read crime novels for 12 years already,” admits the world-famous Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen, during a writer and bloggers meeting organized by the publishers Zvaigzne ABC. His detectives, about the special investigations Department Q, have won the undivided attention of readers all around the world. Received prestigious literature awards, in no way is he planning to relax in the near future, but with great enthusiasm gets down to the next set of crimes that will have to be unravelled by investigator Carl Morck and his unusual team. And, Jussi, in his idiosyncrasies, does not fall behind the main characters of his books.

Observing the writer, who slightly resembles the actor Dennis Hopper, a bit of a surreal feeling takes over. Just this morning, reading the last pages of his latest book published in Latvian, ‘Message in a Bottle’, I thought to myself that this author has an inexplicable charisma. It is so difficult to separate Jussi from the central character of the book – Detective Carl Morck, that it seems – I will meet none other than the Head of Department Q today. With a good sense of humour, and a sharp mind, the enriched investigator whose greatest joy is to put his legs on the table and dive into an undisturbed nap. And it turns out the writer’s biggest weakness is … laziness. Exactly this trait, he has given to the main character and in order to deal with his own laziness, constantly disturbs the detective as soon as he is going to close his eyes – with new, troubling events.

He avoids other authors’ detectives so as not to be affected by other stories. “The mind is tricky. It hides fragments in memory storage, for example, even something as innocent as reading Dickens’ Oliver Twist in childhood. And me not even noticing, some detail, a thread from it may come to light in my works. A reader, a friend may point it out and then there is food for thought. ”

Jussi Adler – Olsen genuinely fascinates with colourful characters, and from the classical detective story, an unlikely storyline. Instead of being tormented by guessing, and only in the last page find out who is guilty, very soon after immersing into the story, you find out who the killer is and get into their mind. The author writes from the perspective of different individuals – the investigator Carl and his team members, the victims’ and of course the villain’s. In short – if the detective is going to open a door, you hold your breath, because a couple of pages ago you had been in the killer’s mind and know that he is standing behind the door with a knife in his hand. That’s why Jussi considers his works to be in the thriller genre – the reader gets a proper dose of tension and adrenaline living through the fates of all the characters. “I teach you empathy. I allow you to look into the cruelest serial killers’ mind and find out why they have become the embodiment of evil. You read about their hard childhood, when it was forbidden to laugh, fanatically religious parents who ruthlessly use physical force, and for a moment you feel for them. But I do not condone them, only show what result the emotional trauma attained during the childhood may lead to,” adds the writer. All of the author’s generated stories are fiction, but unfortunately, in the reality, even more terrifying crimes occur. So Jussi sticks to fantasy, and takes on fictional events.

Asked about the rituals that help him to focus on writing and attracts the muse of inspiration, Jussi admits that the most powerful of these is the use of the historic word processing programme WordPerfect. Only a blue screen and white letters that do not tire the eyes and don’t distract attention to anything else. “The text does not look nice in there, in fact – prehistorically terrible, but only like that can I work for hours. It is a kind of self-discipline. Later, when the already finished work is being converted to Word, it already looks much neater. Here, I separate text in the right places so that even in the evening when reading in bed and falling asleep, you would want to read a little bit more. And finally, when the document is transformed into PDF format, then I can see how the story will look to/ will be read by my reader. At this point there is a very good feeling!”

Jussi also reveals a trick for all aspiring writers – for inspiration and to come up with a fictional development of events, just a few seconds are sufficient! “That’s right – devote at least ten seconds every day and the solution, the development of the story, will come on its own.” Jussi, unlike other authors, doesn’t spin the story in the writing process. Before getting to the novel, he writes a 22-page summary of the story’s development. So he has the solution in hand, even before the first line of the story is written.

How can a man, who doesn’t work on solving crime on a daily basis, be able to give his heroes skills to unravel the path even in the greatest dead end?  “Imagination! This is the best tool that surpasses any real experience. Put it in use, and you will be surprised by what you are capable of. Well, for example. You have trapped your main character in a telephone booth that they can’t get out of. Let’s say it’s a woman, she’s tied up, mouth sealed with duck tape and a rope around her neck. As soon as she tries to move, the rope strangles her. The telephone booth has tinted windows, through which nothing can be seen from the outside. It is located near a playground where children are playing. You can’t kill the main character, she needs to get out of there. How can she attract attention to be rescued?”, the author awakes a detective in everyone present.  Every guess he cuts as with a knife – no, the victim’s legs are also tied, she can’t call in any way, neither can she scream. Everyone gives up . “Well, you see, you didn’t allow for free imagination. She peed, the urine through the cracks in the floor flowed next to the booth. A child sees moisture surrounding the booth and starts building sand castles because they think it is water. A nanny notices that, comes closer and from the badly smelling castles understands that it is not water. And notices that it is all around the booth. Now – the solution in hand! She notifies the police about the suspicious booth, and your heroine is released.”

Meeting with Jussi Adler – Olsen leaves a great aftertaste – the author has a strong personality, who inspires with his openness and joy of living. A spark of humour constantly flashes in his eyes. I understand that it would be possible to talk for hours and hours with him, and it would be time spent terrifically, just like reading a good detective story .

Three Jussi Adler – Olsen books have been published in Latvian:

The Woman in the Cage. The story where the reader is introduced with Department Q, detective Carl Morck, his fascinating Assistant Assad (who becomes the favourite of all readers) and their peculiar Assistant Rose. Department Q is in fact created due to police reform – for the management to have a place where, as far as possible from everyone else, to keep away from the usual rules of the office, noncompliant investigator Carl Morck. His office, from now on, is a cellar, where his Assistant Assad pursues Muslim prayers and prepares coffee floating in sugar, while Assistant Rose paints her nails with a black marker pen. A case with a five-year old history comes to their focus, which soon turns out to still be urgent today. Because somewhere, in a sealed compression chamber, for five years already a woman has been held captive.

The pheasant killers. Does money guarantee impunity? Students of a prestigious boarding school are looking for entertainment in violence and with every crime they become even more brutal. In turn, some homeless person, in her clouded mind, holds the key to the solution of the events. Carl has to remove his legs from his table and get down to work.

Message in a bottle. One of the most interesting books of the Q series in which the adrenaline is pulsing on each page. The only hope of two abducted children is in the message in the bottle thrown in the water and written in their own blood. Unfortunately, after it is found by fishermen, it lies forgotten on the windowsill of the local police station for a couple of years. Meanwhile, the villain commits further crimes without hindrance. In this story, new developments in the characters of Carl’s teammates also appear. Assad becomes ever mysterious about his past, while Rose’s twin sister turns out to be even stranger and fiercer. And besides, when Carl’s nap in the basement office is disturbed by a swarm of obsessive flies…
