Taizemes ceļojums: Chiang Mai province un ziloņu otrā dzīve/ Chiang Mai province and the second life of elephants

The flight to Chiang Mai from Bangkok only takes an hour. Next, I suggest settling outside the city to explore the diverse nature, besides, the climate here is a little more refreshing than in the south. Agreeing on the amount beforehand, a taxi can be rented for the whole day and then leisurely pass through longer and shorter serpentine roads, exploring Thailand’s central northwest.

Iespaidīgais horizonts. Labākais skatpunkts paveras no Mon Cham virsotnes.

The impressive skyline. The best view opens from the Mon Cham peak. Among the dazzling multicoloured flower beds, you can almost meditatively gaze at the valleys of rice and strawberry fields. On this day it’s worth visiting the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden at the tip of which Canopy Walkway has just recently been opened – a footbridge built above the tree tops offers impressive views of the green foliage and distant mountain ranges. A tip – as only a certain number of people can be on the footbridge at the same time, the queue may take up to two hours. However, the visitors are mainly local, and the famous Thai hospitality expresses itself in letting polite foreign travelers jump the queue, you just need to smile and enquire about such a possibility.

Sunday Walking Street Market in Chiang Mai City. Unlike in traditional markets, local craftsmen especially prepare for this bazaar, and it’s possible to hunt for really high quality and authentic items here. You should arrive around eight in the evening, or even later, because then the stream of people becomes less dense, besides, trading lasts until midnight. Swelter, chatter, and the nightly sky draws in the vibrating atmosphere for several hours.

Elephant Nature Park. Touch the elephants, feed, and wash them in a nature reserve – this dream has come true and I will say, without fear, that I experienced one of those days I will never forget. The Elephant Nature Park houses giants who have been set free from the bondage of tourism entertainment and forced labour. In the park, with every step, emotional stories that take your breath away in admiration for these graceful giants can be encountered. For example, since birth, a blind elephant girl Jokia was employed for the entertainment of tourists, only the owner could not accept that the elephant was often disorientated and, in a fury, gouged the animal’s eyes out altogether…. The elephant managed to be saved, and be delivered to the Reserve, where it was immediately adopted by another elephant girl who now does not take a step back and is Jokia’s eye sight – both can be observed moving around together, and a heart will warm glimpsing happiness in the reflection of the blind eyes. And there are many such stories. To understand them, the Elephant Nature Park offers visitors to participate in a one- or multi-day programme where, in small groups accompanied by an experienced guide, you can learn responsible handling of elephants. We spent a day with three elephants, of which the oldest is 60 years old, while the youngest – only 2. Firstly we fed them, became accustomed to the trunk touching our hands, and a friendship was established. Then, we went for a spectacular walk in the jungle and at the end of the day, the cherry-on-top followed – a shared swim in the river where the big giants snorkel while allowing their backs to be rubbed with the delight of a child, so everything obtains an even more incredible feeling. The Elephant Nature Park visit is a wonderful adventure that makes us think about responsible travel, and the opportunity to participate in this unique animal conservation programme because, as we know, the elephant population in Thailand, along with the forest, is shrinking despite various prevention measures. Asian elephants are smaller in size than their brothers in Africa, and riding on their back (especially in a wooden saddle) is painful for the animal, so if you are in Thailand, choose to visit only those places where the encounter with this wonderful animal is aimed at ensuring its well-being, not torturing for selfish goals. Looking into the eyes of a happy elephant … That is an unforgettable moment!
