Dover Street Market (17-18 Dover Street). Konceptveikals, kas izvietojies vairākos stāvos, pārsteidz ar radoši ekstravagantu dizainu – katrā stāvā šķiet paplosījies Endijs Vorhols. Patiesībā Dover Street Market koncepcijas autore ir kulta zīmola Comme des Garcons dibinātāja, dizainere Reja Kavakubo. Ekstravagantā kundze ļavusi savam avangardiskajam stilam izpausties par visiem simts procentiem. Klejojot pa stāviem, nonāksiet gan improvizētā mājoklī, gan futuristiska minimālisma apskāvienos. Getting high London style
Slightly harsh, but undeniably one of the most stylish metropolises in the world. Where modern and hundred year old traditions encounter. Cordiality and snobbery. The city from where such spirits of their age as Daniel Defoe, Alfred Hitchcock, Ian Fleming, Marianne Faithful come from.
London is a place where fortunes rise and fall in a flash. What was recently a must have, can belong to the past today. That’s why you have to try so much. Allot less time for sleep, and absorb the city’s energy till late night. Don’t lose yourself in the abundance of fashion, culinary pleasures, and entertainment but look into the city’s most stylish jungle with the eyes of an insider, catching the feeling of fulfillment.

Enticing Cuisine
La Fromagerie (2-6 Moxon Street). Marylebone district has a very special gem – a cheese and fresh product store and a taste-testing café in one. La Fromagerie is the right place where, in an oasis of peace, you can shelter from the crowds of Oxford Street. When entering, it appears you have arrived in an improvised farmers market where fresh vegetables bask in wickers and jam jars are neatly arranged in a line on the shelves. But, a cheese-tasting room is visible in the back with a long wooden table where everyone bunches together in a friendly way shoulder to shoulder. Here, treat your taste buds to a tempting cheese plate (with the best cheeses of England, France, and Italy), the appropriate wine and as a dessert, cakes baked on site. La Fromagerie is a real paradise for cheese lovers! Imagine, for example, the Italian cheese selection – Caprini Tartufo, Scimudin, San Andrea, Pecorino Montefalco, Gorgonzola Dolce with a slice of freshly baked baguette and a sip of cool Pinot Grigio…it’s bliss. With the cheeses tasted, they can then be purchased in their cheese room, where the perfect temperature is maintained, and where the scent almost knocks you over.
Neal’s Yard Dairy (17 Shorts Gardens). To continue with cheese – another destination for gourmands, where your head can spin from the cheese variety on offer. This legendary cheese store, where it is possible to taste and purchase cheese from the best English (and French) dairies. Just ask, and you will be told the history of any cheese cart-wheel – where it is made, how long it has fermented, and in what way it has travelled to the capital. The store’s shelves almost crack from the honorable Mr. Cheddar and his colleagues’ weight. Even a few metres before the store, anyone will find the entrance door with closed eyes – just following the smell.
Maze (10-13 Grosvenor Square). Michelin starred British gastronomy stage superstar Gordon Ramsay’s name doesn’t need any commentary in London. Maze is another trophy in the collection of this culinary shark – the impressive, dark timber coloured designed room has a big bar and countless tables. Take your seat and the show can begin. Wine card? You will be brought an iPad with which you can choose the most pleasing refreshment from the virtual offer of beverage. Menu? It changes every day. Order 2 to 3 dishes (that’s obligatory because portions are small) or choose the special chefs-taste’s menu with 7 dishes. And then simply enjoy the intimate atmosphere, waiters’ skits, and of course the fantastic food. But afterwards, with a glass of Bollinger, celebrate life at the bar.
Shopping hot spots
Dover Street Market (17-18 Dover Street). A concept store located in several floors surprises with a creatively extravagant design – it seems like Andy Warhol has ramped it up in every floor. In fact, Dover Street Market concept’s author is cult label Comme des Garçons founder, designer Rei Kawakubo. The extravagant lady has let her avantgarde style manifest itself 100 percent. Strolling through the floors, you’ll come across an improvised home and an embrace of futuristic minimalism. Apart from Comme des Garçons, such labels as Lanvin, Martin Margiela, Alexander McQueen, YSL are represented here. And these are only a few of the famous names whose collections are exhibited on an effective background almost as if art pieces. But when you want a break and a slightly democratic feeling, I suggest visiting Rose Bakery located on the top floor. Here, breakfast/lunch takes place in an explicitly friendly atmosphere – the whole room is taken up by a long wooden table and two four-person tables. Everyone congenially squeezes in (around lunch time it’s hard to find a free seat), chats, gets acquainted and the meal takes place in the way of a festive atmosphere. Try the days’ special offer (from leek soup to traditional English meat pies), but for dessert you must try the carrot cake – its fame has spread far out of the walls of this youthful café. It melts in your mouth!
Fortnum & Mason (181 Piccadillly) Stores history in the best English tradition, goes back to 1707. Three hundred years later from a small food store, it has grown into an iconic department store, where you can still feel the breath of the historic profoundness in a good way. Sweets, superb quality teas, china and silver tableware, leather goods, home design items, located over four floors, to which antique and very pompous timber stairs are leading. In the Royal Racehorse in Ascot, Fortnum & Mason picnic baskets are still the No. 1 choice for the British aristocracy, and if you want one like that, then according to your budget, you can fill it with cheese, smoked foods, sweets, and beverages. It would be a pity after getting acquainted to the stores selection, not to treat yourself with an ice-cream espresso in The Fountain restaurant, where you can still see till perfection dressed-up ladies in their golden years with the requisite Hermes or Smythson handbags. But if you wish to see traditions worthy of a monarch, go to the Queens Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon on the 4th floor, in which this March’s opening had none other than … of course, the Queen herself.
Smythson (40 New Bond Street). In this store, stylish stationary, leather accessories, planners, diaries and fashion accessories can be found. Among the most famous Smythson clients, there are the royal family, Madonna, Grace Kelly, and other celebrities. In 1908, precisely Smythson created the first diary to take with you in your daily journeys. The company’s logo, in golden letters, still decorates each of its items, but if you wish to make the product even more personalized, an expert will engrave the new owner’s initials on the spot. The purchase is packed with genuine English care, and tied up with a navy blue ribbon, which at once more, confirms the stores personal attitude to each of its guests.
Victoria’s Secret (111 Bond Street). Exactly in London, the first Angel store outside the USA was opened, and the British women have the enviable opportunity to treat themselves with the famous label’s lingerie and accessories without a week-long wait for delivery. The main store is located in New Bond Street and its gorgeously decorated shop-windows make every woman’s heart flutter. Victoria’s Secret is something between a boudoir, women’s club, and a luxury store where you can happily forget yourself for a few hours. Store employees, dressed in smart suits with the compulsory tape-measure in their hands, are always ready to suggest the proper size and whisper about the hottest novelties from the collections.
After sunset
Coburg bar (Carlos Place). The bar is located in the luxury hotel The Connaught whose recent 70 million renovations are worth every pound spent. Classical in the reserved British style and to the last thought-out detail, the interior guarantees Coburg’s place on the top of London’s most stylish bars, while professional bartenders discreetly create the best drinks in town. Here, an intimate atmosphere dominates, which in combination with the quiet sounding jazz in the background makes the impression of a private club. Sipping a Marlene Dietrich cocktail or special whisky suggested by the bartender, you touch the spirit of the departed centuries and will forget that just outside 2012 gallops past. Don’t be surprised if at some point you notice a lookalike of Charles Dickens here. Back to reality brings only the fact that after leaving the bar he speeds away in his latest model Aston Martin.
Home House Club (20 Portman Square) A private club, which you can enter only if being a member, is a bit of a challenge. But once you step over the Home House Club doorstep you get in a special world. I, personally, got there thanks to a member of this club who showed our little group around the stylish party epicenter. Home House Club resembles a movie you have become a director of. Moving through an uncountable royal room labyrinth, observing champagne flows, and with every cell of your body feeling the music vibrations created by the DJ, you are overwhelmed by the unwearying energy wave of the metropolis. Seems just in a moment the main character of the movie Cosmopolis will appear – exhausted from the overabundance of life, the new millionaire searching for new action.
Home House Club is located in three buildings – it simultaneously has a nightclub, restaurants, bars and a 20-room guest house (of course, only for members). It is not surprising when I get to know that the Home House Club bohemian style for the night’s lodging have also been chosen by Depeche Mode. In fact, it is really easy to imagine in the middle of the all-embracing party at the cosmic bar designed by Zaha Hadid the hedonist Martin Gore. The bar counter style, by the way, could be envied by any alien – without a doubt it resembles a super stylish UFO. Home House Club is like a dot on an ‘i’ after which you want to keep the special aftertaste for a long time. In fact, exactly in there in a party is the best place to wait for the sunrise.
