Hannele Merik, zīmola MERÏKH radītāja, stāstu par somu radīšanu aizsāk ar tādu pašu frāzi kā es – “Reiz meklēju ideālo somu…”. Un tā no vēlmes attīstījās konkrētas idejas aprises. Pastāsti, kā radās MERÏKH zīmols?
MERÏKH radās jau 2009. gadā, kad dzīvoju Spānijā. Kādudien aizdomājos – žēl, ka nav elegantas un stilīgas somiņas, ko varētu pievienot suņa pavadiņai. Tad nu ņēmu un izgatavoju šādu somiņu pati mājās, un no citiem saņēmu labas atsauksmes! Sapratu, ka esmu izveidojusi ko tādu, kas tirgū patiesībā nemaz nav pieejams. Savulaik ASV esmu apguvusi dizainu, tāpēc nolēmu, ka iesāktais jāturpina – izstrādāju Multi somiņas dizainu, ieguvu patentu un sāku ražošanu. Taču man nebija laika šo zīmolu attīstīt, jo 3,5 gadus dzīvoju un strādāju Ķīnā kādā spāņu modes uzņēmumā. Beidzot 2013. gadā nolēmu attīstīt savu zīmolu un izveidot uzņēmumu. Ņemot par paraugu oriģinālo Multi somiņu, izstrādāju pilnu kolekciju un 2014. gada sākumā zīmols bija patiešām dzimis.
Pastāsti vairāk par mazās somiņas ideju. Kas tai iedvesmoja?
Pie idejas līdzvainīgs ir mans pundurpinčers Lovo. Kad vedu viņu pastaigāties, nekad neņēmu līdzi rokassomu, – līdz ar to rokas vienmēr bija pilnas ar dažādiem sīkumiem. Tad iedomājos, ka man gribētos somiņu, ko varētu piestiprināt pie suņa pavadas. Tā arī radās ideja pirmajai MERÏKH somiņai. Patiesibā vienmēr esmu bijusi radoša, bieži ar savām biznesa idejām dalos ar draugiem. Taču šis ir mans pirmais profesionālais projekts.
Tavs uzņēmums atrodas Stokholmā?
Uzņēmums atrodas Tallinā, tur man ir studija un noliktava. Taču zīmola saknes nak no Stokholmas, jo tur esmu dzimusi. Mans tēvs ir soms, māte – igauniete, bet mana dzimtene ir Zviedrija. Uzaugu Stokholmā, tur arī pabeidzu biznesa studijas un daudzus gadus strādāju. Zviedriju pametu 27 gadu vecumā. Septiņus gadus vēl esmu nodzīvojusi Spānijā, tris gadus Ķīnā, tris mēnešus Honkongā un vēl trīs menešus ASV esmu mācījusies dizainu. 2013. gada beigās pirmoreiz dzīvē ierados Igaunijā un tagad dzīvoju tur.
Kā tu raksturotu MERÏKH somas?
MERÏKH somas ir unikālas skandināvu dizaina ādas somas. Šīs somas var izmantot tādas, kādās tās ir, un tām klāt var pievienot arī Multi somiņu, padarot to dizainu vel interesantāku.
Kā tev šķiet, kur slēpjas MERÏKH unikalitāte?
Vienkāršībā. Tu pati vari izvēlēties kā nesāt savu somu. Ja tev nav vajadzības ņemt līdzi smago somu, noņem no tās Multi somiņu un izmanto to kā rokassomiņu vai pat maku. Turklāt to var pievienot pie motocikla, velosipēda, jostas vai suņa pavadas.
Apraksti vienu dienu savā dzīvē! Ko mēs redzētu, ja sekotu katram tavam solim?
Darbadienās domāju jaunas idejas, kā attīstīt un uzlabot zīmolu. Domāju par dizainu, mārketingu, pārdošanu. Cenšos atrast jaunus sadarbības partnerus, apmeklēju dažādus pasākumus un nepārtraukti prātoju, ko vēl uzlabot somām. Ja darbadiena nav pārāk gara, dodos uz sporta zāli vai jogu. Brīvajā laikā mīlu ceļot, pavadīt laiku ar draugiem un domāt par jaunām iespējām un izaicinājumiem.
Kāds ir tavs lielākais mērķis vai sapnis?
Es vēlētos, lai MERÏKH kļūst par visā pasaulē novērtētu zīmolu tā kvalitātes dēļ.

In search of the perfect bag
My relationship with bags is not an easy one. Not at all. On a daily basis I need one which would fit everything that comes in handy during my, quite active, working day: laptop, magazines, folders, planner and, of course, a million little things without which a woman can not do throughout the day. But it should also be comfortable, not too heavy, and…. something to have ‘a sense of chemistry’ with. As you can see, the potential bag really has to undergo a considerable selection process before I call it mine.
So, just like a detective, I thoroughly searched, with no rush, using my powers of deduction, and sometimes consulting my Watson (best friend). And then it happened! I noticed it nowhere else but on Facebook – on the Scandinavian brand MERÏKH’s account. There it was- a beautiful, large format brown leather bag, which, as it turned out later, also hid transformation capabilities.
The MERÏKH brand creator, Hannele Merik begins the story of her bags’ creation with the same phrase as I – “Once I was in search of the perfect bag…”. And so from a wish, developed the contours of a concrete idea. Hannele dreamed of finding a small, useable in a couple of ways, clutch in which to put the essentials (mobile, money, keys) when taking her miniature pincher Lowo for a walk. Ideally, the bag could be attached to the dog leash or belt. Exactly like that the vision of the Multi purse model came, and rather soon after Hannele, instead of a sketch, held the first product in her hands. Born in Stockholm, Sweden but currently living and working in Tallinn, Hannele develops MERÏKH brand products, spoiling lovers of good design with high quality and stylish bags.
One is to look at a bag virtually, but it’s quite another – to try it in practice. I set down to test three models:
In the special pet carrier, my dog Stefano got in without prompting, and, frankly, it wasn’t possible to get him out. A bag perfectly suited for doggies (or cats) weighing up to 4 kg – that kind of four-legged friend will feel comfortable and stable in it, but a net window with a leather lid on the side allows for light to flow in, in those situations when the carrier’s zippers have to be closed, for example, when being on board an airplane. The carrier has both convenient handles and a solid leather belt, but the zipper pockets have room for treats and a leash. The visual effect scores a ten, the model is elegant, and the gently brown color easily matches clothes. As Stefano very rarely stays at home alone, this bag is great for daily use – when going to a meeting or lunch in a restaurant, the pet doesn’t bother anyone, and comfortably nestles down in his house or bag.
The plan for Friday evening is a small party in the city. Typically, this is another rock to stumble upon in the bag world – you only need your mobile, keys and lipstick, but even the smallest purse can’t be put in a pocket while dancing at a party. The Multi purse is universal – it is possible to slide your hand behind the side pocket, and it easily clings to your wrist, but it is also possible to fasten the purse comfortably to your belt using the leather straps on the back. The size is absolutely perfect, you can’t put anything big in it, but it will fit all of the woman’s basic ‘survival kit’. On a daily basis, the Multi purse can be used as a wallet, and with a leather chain attach it to any other MERÏKH or other brand bag. But when going for a walk with the dog, it can be easily fastened to the leash’s handle.
SHOPPER justifies its name, charming both shopaholics and anyone else who likes a well-capacious bag in which you can bring everything with you. Really, seriously – everything. Even throughout the day, when I put in my laptop and charger, my not at all small planner, a couple of magazines, clothes from the seamstress, and the just purchased bag of spinach, the zipper closed without the slightest effort. Also ideal for a trip as hand luggage, slightly Scandinavian ascetic, but elegant and stylish… This really is love at first sight! It can be styled with the Multi purse – I attached it to the front, but just as good the purse can be put inside the shopper. It will be an ideal solution for situations when the big shopper is not necessary for a while, and you can leave it in the trunk of your car, but the small purse containing the most important things can be easily detached and taken with you.
Joyful Hannele herself seems the best model for the MERÏKH brand – I offer a small conversation in which she reveals where she draws inspiration for yet other ideas:
How did the MERÏKH brand begin?
The MERÏKH brand began in 2009 when I was living in Spain.
I got the idea that there should be an elegant and trendy purse that could also be attached to a dog’s leash, a belt etc. I made the first bag by myself at home, and got great feedback on it. After a few design courses in the USA, I realized that I had made something that was not on the market, so:
I designed, produced, and made a patent for the Multi purse, and started to market and sell it. However, I did not have time to proceed with the brand as I got a job in China for a Spanish fashion company where I worked and lived for 3.5 years, while being responsible for fashion accessories.
In 2013, I decided to proceed with the brand, and created my own company. I designed an entire collection around the original Multi purse, and launched the brand in the beginning of 2014.
What is the background story?
The story actually started with my mini pincher Lowo. When I took him for a walk, I usually did not take my handbag with me and had everything in my hands. This made me think that I would like to have a nice handbag that could also be attached to a dog’s leash, and from there the story of the first original MERIKH bag began.
I have actually always been creative and business-minded, and made many things at home and shared them with friends, but this was my first professional project ☺.
Do only you work on the bags’ design, or do you bring in additional help?
I do all the work on my own.
The brand located in Stockholm?
The brand is located in Tallinn, Estonia, I have my studio and warehouse there. However, the roots of the brand are in Stockholm as I was born and raised there. My father is Finnish and my mother Estonian, however my home country is Sweden. I grew up in Stockholm, finished my Business and Supply Chain studies there, and also worked there for many years. I left Sweden when I was 27 years old. I have also lived in Spain for 7 years, China for over 3 years, spent 3 months in Hong Kong, and I completed a 3-month design course in the USA. Since the end of 2013, I’ve been living in Tallinn for the first time in my life.
How would you describe the style of MERÏKH bags?
MERÏKH bags are unique Scandinavian leather bags. They are easy to use as they can be styled via the Multi purse, with several possibilities.
In your opinion, where does the uniqueness of MERÏKH lie?
The uniqueness of MERÏKH is that you can: simply wear your bag as it is, or style your MERÏKH bag via the mini Multi Purse that can be attached with the 2 removable straps or chain in several different ways. Also, the colors can be combined. This option comes in handy if you don’t want to carry all your heavy items; take the Multi purse off and use it for your personal belongings while leaving the heavier bag behind.
The Multi Purse can also be used as a handbag / wallet, or attached to your motorcycle, bicycle, pet leash, belt etc. Simple uniqueness, you decide how to wear your bag.
Describe one day in your life – what could we see if we followed you around in your footsteps?
One working day in my life looks more or less like this: Work with new ideas and improvements for the brand: design, sales, visibility and marketing. Find new interesting cooperation possibilities, attend events, and continuously create and improve our design and products. Hopefully, if it’s not too long of a working day, I’ll have time to go and exercise a bit, enjoy the gym or do a bit of yoga. When I have free time, I love traveling, spending time with friends, and thinking of new interesting opportunities

I would like MERÏKH to be established and known for its unique design globally.
