Zilo debesu karaliste / A Kingdom of Blue Skies

(For English version please scroll down the page)

Žilbinoši zilas debesis virs Abu Dabī, kurās ieduras visdažādāko formu debesskrāpji, to logos atspīdot zilajai debess jumai un tirkīzzilajam Persijas līča ūdenim, gada sākumā uzlādē labāk par jebkuru enerģijas dzērienu. Kad mūsu klimata zona šajā laikā uzdzen mīnusu izturības pārbaudi, Apvienoto Arābu Emirātu aukstākais mēnesis lutina ar patīkamiem + 24 grādiem, kuru iedarbību pastiprina tuksneša tuvums. Tiešais reiss no Rīgas lidostas ļauj nokļūt siltumā tikai sešu stundu lidojuma laikā.

Īpaši tveicīgās dienās te var  labi patverties no karstuma un baudīt ūdens atvēsinošo iedarbību, kamēr tuksneša saule ripo pa debess jumu.

Arhitektūras (bez)robežu iespaidus var gūt apskatot vai apmetoties uz salas esošajā Yas Hotel viesnīcā, kas majestātiski slejas virs formulas trases. Atkal jau elpu aizraujoši pludlīniju risinājumi, kas raksturīgi Abu Dabī mestajiem gravitācijas izaicinājumiem.

Tuksneša balss

Spilgtāko kontrastu starp Abu Dabī spožo arhitektūru veido tuksneša mežonīgās kāpas, kuras var ieraudzīt jau pusotras stundas brauciena attālumā. Rub’al Khali tuksnesis aizņem vairāk nekā 650 000 km2 lielu platību un šeit sastopamas vienas no augstākajām un skaistākajām kāpām, kurās pasaules talantīgākā māksliniece, Māte Daba, sajaukusi skaistās dzeltenā un sarkanā nokrāsas. Jūs uzkāpjat kādā no tām, visapkārt stindzinošs klusums – dzirdams tikai vējš, kas rotaļīgi dzenā smiltis un acīm paveras horizonts, kas šķietami viļņojas saules atspulgā. Peķšņi iznirst kamieļu kolonija, kas neviena nepavadīta, nesteidzīgi pastaigājas. Vai tuksneša mirāža? Nebūt nē, šie gudrie dzīvnieki nāk no vietējām kamieļu saimniecībām – dienā tie var klīst kilometriem tālu, bet vakarā atgriežas savās cilvēku veidotajās apmetnēs iekšējās navigācijas vadīti.

A Kingdom of Blue Skies

The dazzling blue sky above Abu Dhabi, pierced with skyscrapers of all sorts of shapes, their windows reflecting the blue of the sky and the turquoise of the Persian Gulf, gives a charge more than any energy drink ever could at the beginning of the year. When our Baltic climate zone hits a cold endurance test at this time of the year, the coldest month in the United Arab Emirates is a welcomely pleasant +24°C degrees, whose effect is intensified by the proximity of the desert. A direct flight from Riga International Airport allows you to reach the warmth with just a six-hour flight. When the aircraft descends at Abu Dhabi airport, it feels almost unreal, making you wish to step on the desert ground faster, and “connect” to the solar battery charger.

Step into paradise

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque in its majestic splendour catches everyone’s eye who arrives in Abu Dhabi. Even from afar, the white domes create an impression of being clouds in the sky, while the grand size indicates the scale of this fast-growing and economically developed emirate. When entering the territory of the mosque, women’s legs, arms, and head must be covered, and men must also respect this holy place, and observe the rules of proper dress. Arriving early in the morning, while other travellers have not yet flooded this tempting sight, you can feel transcendent peace here, and pay undivided attention to the finest details.

According to the words of the Islamic faithful, the mosque’s architectural harmony with nature in fact symbolizes Paradise – the turquoise sky, the rivers of milk and honey, depicted by white on gold motifs, and the flowers that have blossomed on marble columns are the promised beauty that awaits all believers. Grandioso is precisely the word you want to use time-to-time while looking at the mosque and listening to the narrative from the tour guide; not in vain has the respected travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller ranked Zayed Mosque among the Top 50 most beautiful places in Asia and the Middle East. Footwear left at the entrance, bare feet touch the pleasantly refreshing marble, which is used generously in both floor and wall motifs, while each time eyes are raised, they gaze upon the artwork of the world’s greatest craftsmen – magnificent flowers in 1000 columns or 7 Murano glass chandeliers of unseen size, of which the heaviest weighs 12 tonnes.

But entering the main prayer hall and climbing onto the largest woven carpet in the world, the 2-year work of 1200 Iranian women, you want to bow your head in respect – and even after years, it still seems as if it were just woven, reflecting the mastery of the craft. On Friday afternoons, the entrance is closed for visitors and like a human river, worshippers flow through the main gate, with this prayer area able to host up to 40 000 people. Constructing one of the world’s largest mosques was the cherished idea of the innovative Sheikh Zayed, who didn’t see its completion. A special testimony of respect can be seen in the reading of Koran verses at his grave, in the territory of the mosque, which continues around the clock, only changing the prayers.

Different feelings can be experienced visiting the mosque at sunset, when the natural light is gradually replaced by artificial, and everything immerses into the mysterious aureole of light. In the early morning or late afternoon, a visit to the mosque leaves an indelible impression, making it a kind of gateway that opens up an opportunity for every traveller to look and feel part of the ancient Islamic cultural and historical heritage.

The Beauty of Airy Fragility

From roots to modern times – after visiting the mosque, the recently opened Louvre Abu Dhabi museum designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, brings you back to modern Abu Dhabi. The French, Middle-Eastern “sister” is the first of many grand projects on the island of Saadiyat, which will eventually embody the epicentre of culture and art in Abu Dhabi, with a Guggenheim and Sheikh Zayed National Museum under construction.

The Abu Dhabi Louvre creates a truly breath-taking impression – the colossal dome of the museum seems to levitate in a fragile weightless position, while the white and ascetic walls harmoniously fuse with the daylight. The “floating dome”, or the roof structure, is constructed of 7850 aluminium stars of various sizes, allowing sunlight to penetrate the wide passages – a change in the location of the sun changes the illumination and atmosphere, allowing the museum to be felt with the vibration of each cell. The interplay of light and the surrounding water creates spectacular works of art causing time to be lost gazing upon them. After an hour has passed (or a few!), you realize you should have a look at the exposition located in the labyrinth of galleries – more than 300 works from 17 museum collections in France take you on a trip from the antique to the modern world. Until April 7, art lovers can feed their eyes on a special dessert – the exhibition From One Louvre to Another, which, as the name suggests, offers specially selected works from the grand dame herself – the Louvre in Paris. And how could the eastern Louvre survive without its very own Mona Lisa or a magnet that attracts visitors regardless of any circumstances? In this case, following the slogan “money is not an obstacle,” it is planned that the most expensive painting in the world – Da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi – will be put on display in the Abu Dhabi Louvre in the near future.

After the lotus-land of art, a spinning head needs to restore its balance, so you can simply enjoy the calming effects of the building itself and the water, slowly walking through the passages and seeing off the sunset, which creates mind blowing pastel art pieces. The Abu Dhabi Louvre is a place where art, peace, and architecture all allure at the same time.

Seeking Roots

Observing the panorama of the city where the skyscrapers mirror the shades of the water and the sky, you must come to the conclusion – that the symbol of determination unsurprisingly is exactly this colour. The city has grown in size, height, and power in only a few decades.

Thanks to the monarch’s powerful vision, the wealth from the rich natural resources is lavishly invested in urban and cultural development. Abu Dhabi has grown from scratch in a place where, before, the lonely desert sand met the waters of the Persian Gulf. Perhaps the hardened nomadic lifestyle and the ability to survive in harsh conditions has been deeply rooted in the genes of the indigenous peoples of the Emirates, creating a desire to show the rest of the world – everything is possible. Even though, it sometimes pushes the borders of colourful eclecticism – the Emirates can resemble a young, professional athlete who has come across huge wealth and wants to buy everything – youthful maximalism comes bundled with a breath of modernity. The fact that construction must not only be the tallest and most expensive, but also show smart and sustainable use of resources is vividly demonstrated, for example, with Al Bahar towers – beehive-like buildings are fitted with umbrella-like glass elements that follow the direction of the sun and close or open according to the sun rising or setting, allowing a vast amount of energy to be saved on the air-conditioning inside the building.

You will not find small hotels in Abu Dhabi, the hospitality scene is run by large chains that occupy entire skyscrapers. I would suggest Bab al Qasr, as one of most interesting accommodations to stay in. Both its interior and exterior are dominated by elements of the Arab world, besides it not only has an excellent location (near the Royal Palace, opposite the extravagant Emirates Palace), but also individuality and atmosphere. It has one of the highest atriums in the hotel world, jaw dropping even, and yet the pomp does not overpower the Arab hospitality and the authenticity of the details.

Facing the superlative manifestations of modernism makes me wish to look at the roots. This is best done at the Qasr Al Hosn Museum located in the heart of the oldest building in Abu Dhabi. Dimly and intimately lit rooms invite you to walk through the history pages, perceiving less with the eyes and more with the heart. Especially touching moments can be enjoyed in the miniature cinema where the stories of simple locals are shown, locals who experienced the time when Abu Dhabi was still only a future mirage in the desert. A pearl fisherman for whom hard work has irreversibly damaged his health, a woman from a nomadic tribe who talks about the foundations of Arab hospitality in desert conditions, a camel breeder, and others. Each story hypnotizes, and here you can really succeed in meeting the spirit of the ancient age, the fundamentals of culture, which today hide behind the pulse of the modern centre. Here you can touch the authentic, without the silver linings.

The market has always served as a peculiar mirror to the city’s rhythm. Abu Dhabi does not have a distinct historical market with spice mountains and handicraft Aladin lamps that would peak the imagination and let you travel in the fairy-tales of the East, but it’s worth wandering to the Old Souk in search of cumin, nutmeg, and cardamom. Worthy of a separate adventure is a visit to the Fish Market – you choose a fish from the day’s catch in one of the innumerable merchants’ counters, go to an absolutely modest grill place right there in the pavilion, hand over your fish and wait patiently. Then, after about half an hour, you will get it back wrapped in tinfoil, grilled, and smelling insanely tempting. Walk around the corner to the main entrance where, at plastic tables, locals bubble in conversations and everyone is happily immersed in eating (you are welcome to use your fingers!). You will be served rice, delicious local buns, and various sauces. Roll up your sleeves, and get down to it – a gastronomic adventure, guaranteed. For dessert, dates, bought in the nearby Vegetable and Fruit Market, whose uncountable variations will meet any food lovers wishes, and are an authentic local product.

Spiting Gravity

Yas Island is a place to challenge yourself. There is not only a Formula 1 track, but also one of the world’s most adrenaline-filled amusement parks – Ferrari World. Fasten your seatbelt well, because you will scream in terror and your arms will resemble trembling jelly! Formula Rossa is the fastest roller coaster in the world, which means reaching a speed of 240 km/h in just five seconds; not necessary to add that for a moment any understanding of what is going on evaporates, only fear tears through the eyes and everyone screams! This roller coaster has been tried out by the best Formula 1 drivers, like Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, and others but none of them has stepped out of it with an indifferent expression.

A more relaxing experience can be offered by Yas Waterworld waterpark, a true find for families with kids. However, here also adrenalin addicts can experience a full range of emotions, as some adult attractions can yet again make “your life flash before your eyes”. On especially sultry days, it is pleasant to get shelter from the heat here and enjoy the cooling effect of the water, while the desert sun rolls through the sky.

Architectural limit(lessness) can be experienced visiting or staying at the island-based Yas Hotel, majestically rising above the formula track. Yet again, breath-taking streamline solutions, typical of the challenges against gravity in Abu Dhabi.

The Desert Voice

The brightest contrast to Abu Dhabi’s brilliant architecture is made by the desert’s wild dunes, located just an hour and a half away. Rub’al Khali desert occupies more than 650 000 km2, and is home to one of the highest and most beautiful dunes in which the world’s most talented artist, Mother Nature, has blended beautiful shades of yellow and red. You climb one, and stunning silence falls all around – only the wind that playfully blows the sand can be heard, and the horizon opens up before your eyes, seemingly billowing in the sunshine. Suddenly a camel colony appears, taking a leisurely walk without being led by anyone. Is it a mirage? Not at all, as these intelligent animals come from local camel farms – during the day they can roam kilometres away, but in the evening, they return to their man-made shelter guided by their inner navigation.

A Desert Safari is a favourite way of spending time, and is enjoyed not only by travellers, but also by locals. It is an opportunity to leave the bustling city behind and enter the wild and undisturbed desert. The dunes constantly change, and really resemble a living organism. The Arabian Nights Village tour guide, with an off-road vehicle, takes us to the desert and turns out to be a true racer – allowing you to experience adrenaline-filled moments in the ride through the desert dunes. Afterwards, a small ride with camels follows, letting your pulse decrease and hear the voice of the desert again. In the evening, in the light of a fire, uncountable stars twinkle in the sky, so bright as if someone had polished them. And here you can truly sense Abu Dhabi’s enchanting vigour and truly magnetizing beauty both man-made and natural, concentrated in this emirate.

I’m grateful to Abu Dhabi Department of  Culture and Tourism and AirBaltic  for the collaboration in making this material.
